Neural: The First Ten Years

The first Neural ‘online update’ was uploaded 10 years ago (31 May 1997).

To celebrate this event, here’s a link to the amazing software we
included in the first online issue. It’s causing a short
hallucination, kicking your sense of deepness through an optical
illusion. It’s called Pinwheel (for PC, originally we included a
Classic Mac version called BugEyes)

Furthermore we also offer a free original Neural issue #1 (printed in 1993, language: Italian, http://www.neural.it/n/n1.htm) to everyone who will subscribe or renew within a week, so till 7 June
(http://www.neural.it/subscribe.phtml).

Be quick to grab one of the last copies of this quite rare issue!

Have visions!

Upgrade! Lisbon in May featuring Ivan Franco

30.05.07: Ivan Franco

19:00 @ Lisboa20 Arte Contemporânea
Rua Tenente Ferreira Durão 18B (Campo de Ourique)

Ivan Franco was born in Lisbon in 1974. In 1993 started studying engineering and in 1995 he joined the research group GASA, one of the most advanced in the fields of computing experiments and owner of the first Virtual Reality Lab in Portugal. During this time, Franco also developed an interest in music, having played in several rock bands.

Departing from these two interests (computers and music) he started exploring the possiblities of computer music. Frustrated by the lack of physical performativity in electronic music, he looked for ways of recovering both that physicality and the man-machine interaction. In 199 he started a Master program in Barcelona where he developed his own instruments, presented in some of the most important festivals of that city.

In this presentation Ivan Franco will show his work in the area of the man-machine interaction, with special attention to his artistic creations. He will also show his most recent musical instrument, the Airstick, precently presented at NIME (New Interfaces for Musica Expression)

“Media Studies 2.0″ London Metropolitan University

Dr William Merrin, University of Swansea: ‘Media Studies 2.0′

Weds 30th May (4pm – 6pm): ILRC Seminar Room Commercial Road

Further information: Contact Jon Baldwin(j.baldwin@londonmet.ac.uk)

Open to all staff, students, and the interested general public.

There has recently been a call to reject certain aspects of traditional Media Studies and establish a Media Studies 2.0. This has largely been led by William Merrin (http://mediastudies2point0.blogspot.com/) and David Gauntlett. (http://www.theory.org.uk). Merrin describes this as a ‘desire to see every part of media studies broaden its knowledge and references and re-test and update itself to get to grips with the new media revolution.’ This debate has seen some exchanges on the MeCCSA website, and the seminar will allow elaboration and discussion of Media Studies 2.0.

William Merrin is the author of Baudrillard and the Media: A Critical Introduction (2005), and Media Studies: A New Introduction (2007). He is editor of New Media: Key Thinkers (2008) and Engaging Baudrillard (2008).
